Last summer the Bridges staff selected the seawolf as the mascot for our fledgling school. “Seawolf “ is another name for the Orca, or killer whale. We liked the idea of being the wolves of the sea. We adopted the pack philosophy in our earliest days as a team. ”We are family” is the rule that we live by…children and staff alike…
But more than the beauty and strength of the Orca drew us to this remarkable mammal. The Orca mantains a complex social structure that demands that both male and female parents remain with the young whales for their entire lives! Their vocal expressions and their complicated social structures are unlike those of any other mammal except humans. Perhaps humans could learn a thing or two from the Orca.
Like the Orcas, our children at Bridges are at risk . . . Just as the seawolf is endangered, so are our students in danger . . . of dropping out of school . . . of not achieving the dreams and goals that all of our citizens are entitled to. In our society we are all intricately connected . . . now is the time for us to stop and think about how we will treat these most vulnerable of our children . . . we must reflect . . . reconnect . . . and respond as better educators of these young people . . .
